5-Axis CNC Non-RTCP Post-Processor – Autodesk Fusion / HSM

Retrofitted 5-axis CNC machine – technical illustration

Overview: Custom 5-Axis Non-RTCP Post-Processor Development

PNC developed a custom 5-axis non-RTCP post-processor in Autodesk Fusion for an older retrofitted CNC machine equipped with a non-standard industrial controller. The machine did not have native RTCP functionality, meaning the control system could not automatically compensate for the tool center point during simultaneous 5-axis movement.

Because of this limitation, the full kinematic compensation had to be calculated directly inside the post-processor. The moving-head machine configuration required custom logic for head-axis transformation, tool length compensation, rotary angle output, and machine geometry correction.

The project allowed the machine to perform stable simultaneous 5-axis machining without relying on native RTCP support from the controller.

Scope of work included:

  • Custom Autodesk Fusion / HSM post-processor development
  • 5-axis non-RTCP motion logic
  • Moving-head kinematic transformation
  • Tool center compensation inside the post-processor
  • Machine geometry and pivot point compensation
  • Rotary axis calculation and output
  • Toolpath testing, adjustment, and validation
  • Machine tuning and operational verification

Result:

The retrofitted CNC machine was successfully configured for stable simultaneous 5-axis machining without native RTCP capability. The custom post-processor remains operational and allows the machine to continue producing complex 5-axis work despite the limitations of the older controller.
